In 2025, our Ashland Family YMCA lobby became even more welcoming with the addition of our Art Wall, a rotating gallery featuring local artists and children’s classroom creations each month. What began as a simple idea has grown into a vibrant community space—sparking conversation, inspiring creativity, and bringing moments of joy to everyone who walks through our doors. Studies show that engaging with art can reduce stress, boost mood, and strengthen a sense of belonging, making it a powerful contributor to community wellness. By showcasing local talent, we’re proud to support artists, celebrate creativity, and create a place where art—and community—can thrive.

Our January/February, John Lambie, experienced firsthand how powerful it can be to share art in our YMCA community space. As a well-known local artist and two-time Ashland News Sneak Preview “Favorite Artist,” John found that displaying his work at the Y created meaningful connections with members and visitors in our lobby.

“The Y has followed up on a good idea, the Art Wall, with a great hanging structure and wonderful art lighting. While displaying my art I sold 6 pieces in one month. I displayed my art in Ashland’s and Medford’s best galleries without that result. I’ve been chosen twice as Ashland’s Favorite Artist in the Ashland News’ Sneak Preview, and I look forward to being invited to display at the Y again!”  ~ John Lambie

John is also a dedicated Y volunteer in our Fitness Center—perhaps you’ve seen him around! He’s always friendly, helpful, and happy to lend a hand.

The Ashland Family YMCA is fortunate to have Mila Valenta leading our Art Wall project. She thoughtfully curates the displays, coordinates with artists, and shares her genuine enthusiasm for bringing creativity and community into our lobby.

“It has been a true pleasure connecting with local artists and sharing their work through our YMCA lobby art installation. One of those artists is even part of our Y family. As mentioned above, John Lambie displayed his work in January and February. The joy he felt seeing members recognize and celebrate his art was wonderful to witness.

Our Art Wall continues to highlight talented local creators. Bob Hutton is currently exhibiting his striking vector art through the end of April. In May and June, Judy Fawcett will share paintings that blend abstract expression with realism, including landscapes and portraits. This summer, we’ll also feature something unique—Navajo-style textile art by Kathleen Coolidge, who hand-spins and dyes her own wool to create truly remarkable rugs.

We are grateful for the many artists who have reached out, and our calendar for the year is nearly full! Next time you visit the Y, take a moment to enjoy the art in our lobby—you might even be lucky enough to experience it alongside beautiful live piano music.” ~ Mila Valenta
