Each year on June 6, YMCAs around the world celebrate Founders Day, commemorating the beginning of a movement that has transformed communities for more than 180 years.

The YMCA was founded on June 6, 1844, in London, England, by George Williams and 11 other young men during the Industrial Revolution. Recognizing the challenges facing young workers in rapidly growing cities, they came together to create a supportive, values-based community where individuals could find belonging, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.

What began as a small gathering with a powerful vision has grown into a global movement serving millions of people across more than 100 countries. Through changing times and evolving community needs, the YMCA has remained steadfast in its commitment to strengthening spirit, mind, and body for all.

This year, our celebration carries even greater significance as we also recognize 175 years of YMCA service in the United States. In 1851, Captain Thomas Valentine Sullivan established the first YMCA in the United States at Old South Church in Boston, launching a legacy of service that continues to impact communities across the nation today.

As we reflect on these milestones, three words capture the story of the YMCA:

Legacy

Our legacy began with a simple but powerful idea: that communities are stronger when people support one another. For generations, the YMCA has adapted to meet the changing needs of families, children, teens, adults, and seniors while remaining groun

ded in its mission and values.

At the Ashland Family YMCA, we are honored to be part of that enduring legacy. Every program we offer, every relationship we build, and every life we touch is connected to a tradition of service that stretches back more than 180 years.

Impact

The true measure of the YMCA is found not in its buildings, but in its people.

Every day, our staff, volunteers, members, donors, and community partners work together to create meaningful impact. Whether it’s helping a child learn to swim, supporting families through affordable childcare, providing opportunities for youth development, encouraging healthy lifestyles, or fostering a sense of belonging, the YMCA continues to strengthen the communities we serve.

The impact of the Y can be seen in countless stories—friendships formed at camp, confidence gained through sports, life skills learned in preschool, and support provided during times of need.

Promise

While we celebrate our history, we are equally focused on the future.

The promise of the YMCA lives in every child who discovers their potential, every family that finds support, and every individual who feels welcomed and valued within our community.

As we look ahead, we remain committed to creating opportunities for all people to learn, grow, and thrive. Wewill continue building stronger communities, expanding access to programs, and ensuring that future generations experience the same sense of belonging and purpose that has defined the YMCA since 1844.

On this Founders Day, we celebrate our Legacy, honor our Impact, and renew our Promise for the future.

Thank you for being part of the Ashland Family YMCA story. Together, we continue a tradition of service that began more tha

n 180 years ago and remains as meaningful today as ever.

There truly is No Place Like This Place.
